SAN FRANCISCO, CA, October 1, 2018 – DZYNE Technologies Incorporated (DZYNE) presented their new vision of efficiency and comfort for future business jets — and the next generation of commercial airliners – October 1 at the Revolution.Aero event in San Francisco, California, USA.
The Ascent™ 1000 is a blended-wing-body (BWB) design that is radically different from today’s tube-and-wing airplanes. Blending the wing, body, and tails into a single wing offers a 30% reduction in fuel consumption. The BWB design will make commercial air travel less expensive, quieter, greener, and much more comfortable for the passenger. These benefits have been well-established by research at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Boeing for the past 25 years, but the research also showed the benefits are confined to double-deck airliners over 250 passengers in size.
The challenge for a smaller single-deck BWB was to efficiently package the landing gear. Double-deck BWB’s stow the landing gear in the lower deck away from the passengers but this is not an option for a single-deck BWB. DZYNE has patented a new type of landing gear that solves this problem without disrupting the passenger cabin space. Now, BWB designs can serve today’s single-aisle airliner market of 90-200 passenger that accounts for 75% of the worldwide airline fleet, 50% of fleet fuel consumption, and 90% of fleet airport noise.
The same BWB airframe that has been configured by DZYNE to serve as a 120 passenger super-regional jet can be grown in stages to 200 passengers in capacity. “The airliner offers greater comfort with more legroom, more seat width, and significantly more overhead baggage space than today’s airliners,” says DZYNE’s Vice President, Mr. Mark Page. The layout reduces the distance from the entrance to the most remote seat from 25 rows to only 10, improving boarding times and the overall passenger experience. The expansive cabin space of the BWB design allows this comfort improvement while delivering 50% lower fuel consumption than today’s airliners, and 30% less than future tube-and-wing designs. The BWB design also provides a breakthrough reduction in noise, 25dB below standards, because the engines are located above the wing, shielding the community below.
The surprising low risk of this new technology was highlighted at this year’s Revolution.Aero event. The BWB looks futuristic and different, but it is mechanically simpler than today’s airliners. The Ascent1000 has no flaps or slats, which are complex devices that extend from the wing to prepare for landing. In addition, BWB aircraft have no tails as their function has been blended into the wing. This results in a smooth, simple airframe built from relatively flat, manufacturable components. The new design uses the same engines, electronics, and cockpit systems as other airliners, so there are no special requirements for the BWB.
The Ascent™ business jet variant uses BWB efficiency gains to triple the passenger cabin’s floor-space when compared to today’s top business jets like the Gulfstream G650 and Bombardier Global 7000. “The Ascent™ business jet is not a hallway, it’s a home,” says Mr. Page. “This leap in business jet comfort is achieved while preserving the small footprint that allows it to service destinations unavailable to much larger tube-and-wing airliners.” DZYNE showed interior renderings with multiple bedrooms, stand-up showers, a living room, dining areas, a theater, and an exercise room. A unique feature is the large skylights which fill the cabins with natural light and offer an extraordinary view of the stars at night.
