ADVANCED VTOL SYSTEM
ROTORwing’s vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) means it can operate from almost anywhere. ROTORwing’s efficiency allows it to carry sensors and payloads nearly as far as the most efficient airplane. ROTORwing can observe an area from the air, or land, listen, and collect data before returning to base. This can be performed autonomously, at ranges unachievable with other VTOL aircraft. ROTORwing's quiet electric propulsion enables close proximity missions.
READY FOR TAKE-OFF
For takeoff, ROTORwing has one wing in the forward flight position and the other tilted ~180 degrees to face in the opposite direction. Now the wing spins like a rotor when power is applied. When liftoff RPM is reached, the flaps are deflected down, and the aircraft leaps into the air. A small tail-rotor is used to point the fuselage but it’s not canceling engine torque like a normal helicopter. ROTORwing’s rotor is propelled directly by the motors on the wings. There is no torque reaction to the fuselage, just a free-spinning bearing. This eliminates heavy and complex gearboxes, swashplates, and high-power tail rotors.
At a safe altitude, the wings are tilted upwards until both are vertical stopping the spin. Next, both wings tilt so the engines face forward to fly like a conventional airplane. For landing the process is reversed so ROTORwing can execute a vertical landing. The transition process takes only a few seconds.
