Position Description:

The Aerospace Controls Engineer (AE FCS) in this position will be responsible for the full life-cycle of UAV GN&C subsystems including design, development, coding, debugging, testing, simulation, analysis, and maintenance for new unmanned vehicles. The ideal candidate will have strong problem-solving skills and be able to work well both on an individual basis and in a team environment. The candidate must work well with engineering colleagues, customers, and contractors to effect implementation of system requirements. The AE FCS reports to the Chief Engineer, Program Manager, and Technical Director.

Required Skills and Responsibilities:

  • Lead GN&C-related design requirements development and architecture/design reviews

  • Architect comprehensive GN&C systems with focus on reuse of qualified design and analysis elements

  • Analyze systems and flight test data to support model improvements and root cause investigation of failures and anomalies

  • Document designs and analyses with written reports, presentations, and Engineering drawings

  • Characterize, analyze, test, and troubleshoot control system hardware and software subsystems

  • Architect and develop comprehensive, reusable simulation and analysis tools for model-based control and estimation designs

  • Knowledge of common data bus standards and implementations

  • Interface effectively with users, customers, management, and other engineering personnel

  • Proven teamwork and interpersonal skills with the ability to act in a mentor role and be an advocate for positive change

  • Possess strong verbal and written communications skills

  • Ability to create and follow standard processes and clearly document results

  • Experience with suite of Cloud Cap Technology Piccolo autopilot systems

  • Knowledge of aircraft electrical systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient with developing linearized models from nonlinear flight dynamics models about trim operating conditions

  • Proficient with digital and modern control systems, dynamics, Kalman filter design, and signal processing

  • Experience with Flight test planning, hardware checkout, and gain tuning

  • Experience with aerodynamic stability and control modes, models, concepts, and coefficients

  • Working knowledge of basic aircraft aerodynamics and performance

  • Experience in designing, developing, and analyzing aided inertial navigation systems

  • Experience designing Monte Carlo, hardware-in-the-loop, and 6DOF simulation environments

  • Proficient in C, C++, Matlab; Demonstrated understanding and competence in object oriented design

  • Familiarity with Linux or real-time operating systems a plus

  • Military and/or UAV experience is a plus

  • AIAA Design Build Fly (DBF) experience a plus

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills. Strong listening, questioning, clarifying and summarizing skills to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small group settings

  • A willingness to travel on occasion

Typical Education/Experience

  • Bachelors in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or EE/CS with an aerospace controls emphasis. Masters or PhD preferred.

  • 7+ years of equivalent performance in a progressive technical capacity in GN&C and adjacent fields or a similar combination of experience plus education
